The Art of Reading: a Photo Journal

Lawrence Schwartzwald is a freelance photographer based in New York. Inspired by photographer André Kertész’s 1971 photo essay On Reading, Schwartzwald compiled a photo essay of his own. The result is The Art of Reading (Steidl Books, 2018), a collection of delightful images of people from all walks of life enjoying a good read.

Whether it is at the bus stop, on the subway platform, in an old-school cafeteria, or by the walkway, the anonymous folks in his photographs are in deep thought, oblivious to the urban din, as though they have lost themselves to the printed word.
