Art Moment: A Song Dynasty Rose-Purple Dish

Rose-purple rimmed dish, Song dynasty (960-1279). Diameter: 19.5 cm. Height: 3.3 cm. Excavated in Fangcheng,
Henan Province. Collection of the Henan Museum.

Potters of the Song dynasty (960-1279) mastered the art of simplicity as seen in this shallow dish with a graceful flower petal rim. I am particularly drawn to the colors of the dish interior, where a rare rose-purple glaze is artfully washed over an underlying bluish-grey background. The overall effect is one of zen-like beauty.
