Ode to the Garden

Give me
the green labyrinth
and the svelte slopes,
the silky light of lilies
under a bridge,
the silent cry of willows,
and the breathe of lavender.
Give me wiry stalks
on whose threads
hang little lanterns.
Give me the aurora’s violet petals,
the roses’ burning red,
and all the yellow of dandelions
And I will proclaim you
honeycomb of the world!

Claude Monet (1840– 1926), Water Lily Pond, 1900. Oil on canvas. 90 x 101 cm. Art Institute of Chicago.
