Poetry Moment: ‘You Can’t Lock Down the Sun’

Its far from over, this battle with a powerful and unseen enemy. But even in the middle of the current pandemic, it’s important to keep a calm perspective and remember that nature is still the generous life-giver, as it has been for the past 3 billion years.

YOU CAN’T LOCK DOWN THE SUN

Lately, the mornings are grey,
their greyness amplified by
the hushed silence
of proud cities in lockdown.
But you can’t lock down the Sun
any more than you can quarantine butterflies;
they will still do their fast dance,
and the bees will still tip-toe from flower to flower,
the blazing birds will still circle the sky.
By noon, my city hangs it head low
and the sky is still grey.
But endlessly, the green lungs
continue to oxygenate every living thing
without the slightest reproach,
and tomorrow, at the drumbeat of dawn,
the Sun will spin down its yellow spears,
butterflies will do their fast dance,
bees will tip-toe from flower to flower,
and the blazing birds will circle the sky,
And the earth will exhale its breath,
and we’ll live to fight another day.
