In most studies of the brain, neurons are the stars of the story and glial cells are just supporting actors. But emerging research shows that glial cells play a much bigger role than they have been credited for – in pain perception, memory processing and even fighting infections. Not only that, the most abundant glial cells – star-shaped astrocytes – have an exquisite beauty to boot as shown here.
