Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Alex Da Corte’s 26-foot-tall kinetic sculpture overlooking New York city calls to mind the liveliness and unpredictability of American sculptor Alexander Calder’s standing mobiles. Bonus: It doubles as the perfect spot to celebrate Calder’s birthday today. Created for the Metropolitan Museum’s 2021 roof garden commission, the 26-foot kinetic sculpture combines the minimalist aesthetic of Calder’s standing mobiles with Big Bird, the whimsical character from the beloved TV series, Sesame Street. ‘Alex da corte’s bold work for the cantor roof garden oscillates between joy and melancholy, and brings a playful message of optimism and reflection,’ explains Max Hollein, a director at the Met. The sculpture will remain on view until October 31, 2021.
