Object of the Day: A Korean Bodhisattva

A masterpiece of Korean Buddhist art, this graceful gilded image of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara is from the Goryeo period, circa 1120 to 1285. It is currently in the National Museum of Korea. Mahayana Buddhism, a Bodhisattva is a person who is able to reach nirvana but delays doing so through compassion for suffering beings on Earth.
