We made it through 2023 (well, almost). waded through another year of human-made miracles and mess. Whatever misgivings we have, let us put them aside and give thanks for the many blessings we’ve received. I like take this occasion to share two songs, both sung by the bluegrass virtuoso, Alison Krauss. The first song is an old Irish carol that is rarely heard. Known as the Wexford Carol, this song is believed to date back to the 15th or 16th century. In the video, Krauss is paired with the renowned cellist, Yo Yo Ma in an unforgettable performance. Before we get to the song, here are the lyrics.
THE WEXFORD CAROL
Good people all, this Christmas time
Consider well and bear in mind
What our good God for us has done
In sending his beloved son
With Mary holy we should pray
To God with love this Christmas Day
In Bethlehem upon that morn
There was a blessed Messiah born
Near Bethlehem did shepherds keep
Their flocks of lambs and feeding sheep
To whom God’s angels did appear
Which put the shepherds in great fear
‘Prepare and go, ‘ the angels said
‘To Bethlehem, be not afraid
For there you’ll find, this happy morn
A princely babe, sweet Jesus born
With thankful heart and joyful mind
The shepherds went, this babe to find
And as God’s angel had foretold
They did our saviour Christ behold
Within a manger he was laid
And by his side the virgin maid
Attending on the Lord of life
Who came on earth to end all strife
Good people all, this Christmas time
Consider well and bear in mind
What our good God for us has done
In sending his beloved Son
With Mary holy we should pray
To God with love this Christmas day
In Bethlehem upon that morn
There was a blessed Messiah born
The next song, “Get Me Through December” is also sung by Alison Krauss (with violinist Natalie MacMaster on the violin). A poignant song with a Celtic-sounding tune, the song is about overcoming grief by drawing from one’s deep well to begin again. The lyrics likens pain to a bitter winter which one must endure with faith and hope. As the song progresses, a declaration of hope is made by the lost and wounded soul: “Faith can move mountains of that I am sure ..get me through December, so I can start again.” Here is Alison Krauss singing “Get Me Through December”, performed live with Canadian violinist, Natalie MacMaster.
