Lent is a time of reflection and insight as the seasons change. For Catholics and Christians, it is a time of preparation to celebrate Jesus Christ’s resurrection at Easter. But it should also be a time for everyone to reflect on the Earth’s goodness, giving thanks for the arrival of spring and the renewal of life that it brings.
Today’s music selection comprises two instrumental songs composed by Taizé, an inter-denominational Christian monastic community based in France. Founded in 1940, the fraternity has been actively writing music, primarily chants and choral pieces in English and Latin inspired by Biblical texts and other liturgical works. Many of their compositions echo the ethereal sounds of medieval or Renaissance music. The video I’ve compiled includes two of their recent compositions – ‘Laudate omnes gentes‘ (Praise, all people praise!) and ‘Tui amoris ignem‘ (Come, O Holy Spirit). Listen to them as Lent songs or simply as soothing pieces for quiet contemplation – I believe they can be enjoyed by anyone.
