The Spectacle of Underwater Photosynthesis: Rio Claro, Brazil

We know that trees and green plants on land photosynthesize by using carbon dioxide from the air and energy from the sun to make sugar molecules. But what you may not know is that water plants, too, perform photosynthesis, and they play an important part in oxygenating the Earth. Not only that, when photosynthesizing, water plants create some of the most beautiful spectacle on earth. In one magical river in Brazil, water bubbles fizzle on the surface like champagne as the sun rises in the sky. This happens because as the water plants in the river photosynthesize, they release oxygen in the form of little air bubbles that float to the surface. Where the plants are dense, a sea of fizzing bubbles result, creating air for the atmosphere itself. This rarely known spectacle occurs in the highlands of Sao Paolo in southeastern Brazil where the river Corumbatai crosses the highland town of Rio Claro at 625 meters above sea level. And it is a spectacle that has to be seen to be believed.
