It is impossible not to be moved by the aria Je crois entendre encore (I think I still see her) by the French composer, Georges Bizet (1838-75). Premiered 160 years ago, the piece is an aria from Bizet’s opera Les pêcheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers) which tells a story of love, betrayal, and sacrifice centering around two friends, Nadir and Zurga, who have vowed to never let the love of a woman come between them. However, when a beautiful priestess arrives, their vows are put to the test and each man must make his choice.
