Aula Magnus Hall is the largest of the 16 auditoriums in the Central University of Venezuela (UVC) in the capital city, Caracas. Latin for the “Great Hall”, the capacious auditorium was designed by the Venezuelan architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva in the 1940s and built by the Danish company Christiani & Nielsen from 1952–53. The most notable feature of the hall is a gigantic mobile sculpture by the famed American artist, Alexander Calder (1898-1976). Consisting of a series of ‘cloud’ panels hung from the ceiling, the piece is viewed as one of Calder’s most monumental works, as well as a prime example of the “architecture is art” theory espoused by Carlos Raul Villanueva. The ‘floating clouds’ are not just aesthetically beautiful; the clouds’ wood panels improve the hall’s acoustics to the extent that Aula Magna is said to have some of the best acoustics in the world. For its artistic and acoustic significance, Calder’s floating cloud sculpture was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in November 2000.
