Old School Delights

The phrase “21st century lifestyle” is now used to describe the feeling of detachment or a lack of warmth in daily life. Ironically, the convenience of the wireless world has not resulted in deeper and more intimate connections between people, nor has it fostered a profound appreciation of the things that we once used to cherish – art, artisanal crafts, tasteful interior furnishings that add warmth, charm and coziness to our homes. Perpetually in a hurry, we have also little time to stroll, wander and allow ourselves to be lost in the landscape of nature and human spaces such as lovely quaint towns, cobbled streets lined with old-school bookshops and cafes, and parks where people gather and have slow conversations with one another instead of mindlessly scrolling on the phone. These are old school delights and I for one couldn’t get enough of them. As a writer wrote, “We are here to experience the life-affirming delights this world has to offer, with body, mind and soul, in the finite time that we have.” May a greater appreciation of things vintage and retro help bring us closer to this goal.
